Li Guidan: Make Every Class Count

Date:2020年08月06日

Li Guidan, an associate professor at the School of Electrical and Information Engineering has been dedicated to teaching for over twenty years. She is now teaching three courses, namely circuit basics, electrical measurement experiments, and linear network analysis.

“To make every class count and help students find their own way to fulfillment has always been my original aspiration since the day I became a teacher,” Li said and holding on to this precept, she keeps pace with the times and advances teaching methods and platforms from time to time.

She has won the first prize in the National University Teachers' Circuit Signal Electromagnetic Field Lecture Competition, and the title of Smart Teaching Star selected by the Ministry of Education and other honorary titles. The course "Basic Circuits" taught by her becomes the first batch of national level excellent courses.

A pioneer in online teaching

For a long time, Li has engaged in studying the concept and method of embedding smart teaching in offline classrooms. She was among the first to bring Rain Classroom, a software that supports online teaching into her class and has used it for three years. In 2017, Li was invited to share her experience of using "Rain classroom" at the first national circuit principle smart teaching seminar. Her expertise in smart teaching came in handy when in 2020 the pandemic forced nearly all schools and universities adopted online teaching for the new semester.

Li joined the school's online teaching expert group and shared her accumulated experience in online teaching with other teachers. She also participated in the compilation of "FAQs and Analysis for Use of Rain Classroom at Tianjin University” to help her colleagues get familiar with the online teaching platform.

An innovator in classroom teaching

Over years, Teacher Li has been devoted to class teaching research. She is good at finding problems, analyzing problems in depth, and constantly incorporating new ideas, new methods, and new tools into classroom teaching.

Li Guidan is actively involved in constructing an all-English teaching course for internationalization. As one of the first teachers who set up all-English courses at her school, she has participated in the construction of the all-English course of circuits, creating a mixed all-English teaching method of blackboard writing, multimedia and smart teaching. This teaching mode has strengthened the interaction between teachers and students, using a big data feedback mechanism to constantly observe students' learning effects.

Li reconstructed the English courseware, underlining concept explanation and introducing tools such as mind maps to sort out the logical structure. After three semesters of hard working and exploration, the average score and percentage of high scores of all-English class taught by Teacher Li are higher than those taught in Chinese without reducing difficulty and quality.

Teacher Li insisted on problem-orientation and carried out a study on “smart teaching plan of mixed type of linear network analysis course ", which has greatly improved graduate students’ enthusiasm to attend classes, and effectively improved their communication skills. This research was approved as the Tianjin University Innovative Talent Training Project for Graduates.

A kind and helpful friend to every student

For Li Guidan, the most important task teachers do is to foster students’ growth in academic study and character building. “In my class, not a single student is allowed to lag behind”,Li holds to this belief and trys her best to help those in need. She treats every student in her class as her friends, learns about their personal worries, distresses and difficulties and instructs them accordingly. For those who lack the initiative to study, she arranges them to sit in the front row as often as possible and interacts with them frequently, forcing them to concentrate in class. She spends time talking with students after class and provides personalized guidance. With her help, a student who used to skip classes and often failed in his academic study for the first time since he entered college scored over 90 points in Li’s class. The student couldn’t wait to share his joy with Li Guidan, acclaiming“Dear Madam, this is the first time I have got a score more than 90 points.”

The students she has taught kindly called her "Madam Circuit" or "Master", reflecting their respect and gratitude to Miss Li from the bottom of their hearts.

Teacher Li often says: "My mission as a teacher is to make every class count." With years of perseverance, she has made the classroom full of vitality and shed light on the developing roads of hundreds of students.
