The First "Emerging Engineering Education” (3E) Information Field Technological Practice and Innovation Competition for Tianjin University Students was held at Tianjin University on November 17, 2018.

The competition consisted of three stages: preliminary contests, intermediary heats and final competition. From June 22 to 30, each team was evaluated by preliminary contests held by universities, with some making it through to the intermediary heats. After online evaluation by the competition judges composed of 12 experts from universities and 3 experts from industry, 122 entries were finally selected for the final competition and were placed on exhibition.

After the Final of the "Emerging Engineering Education" Technological Practice and Innovation Competition officially opened the teams were divided into five groups according to their topics. They demonstrated their works within a 10-minute time slot. Experts then asked questions and gave comments on their performances. Finally, 114 works won awards: 27 won first prizes, 40 second prizes and 47 third prizes. Six teams representing Tianjin University competed in the Final. Three of them won first prizes: “Amphibious Robot Snake”, “Robot Countermeasure Systems” and “Face Recognizing Systems Based on Deep Learning”. “Autonomous Navigation Robot” won a second prize. “Automatic aquaculture system based on wireless Internet of Things” and “Man-machine Integration” won third prizes. In the competition, the "Robot Countermeasure Systems " attracted a lot of students’ attention. This work conducts interactive games in a realistic environment, creating an immersive experience of game characters, making online games available in reality and available on its website. This work involved information technology, network technology, infrared communication technology, digital signal processing as well as data calculation and analysis on the server side, fully reflecting a distinguishing feature of "Emerging Engineering Education", that is, multidisciplinary integration.

The Design Competition of Innovation and Engineering Practice in Internet of Things has been held five times. The competition was mainly related to Emerging Engineering Education arising from new technologies, new industries, new formats and new models, putting emphasis on works with an information technology core and with a theme of practical usages of innovative projects.

Director of the Competition Office, Professor Su Hansong said that since 2017, "Fudan Consensus", "Tianjin University Action Plan" and "Beijing Guidelines" constituted the "Trilogy" of Emerging Engineering Education construction, opening up a new path for engineering education reform. The organization of “Emerging Engineering Education” contest is of far-reaching significance: through competition, learning, teaching and reform the innovative ability of university students in engineering practice can be promoted and cultivated.
