The Honorary Professor Conferring Ceremony for Prof. Joachim Holtz was held on Oct. 30, 2023. The attendees included Prof. Gong Jinlong, Vice President of Tianjin University, Tan Chao, Dean of School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Zhang Tao, Vice Dean of School of Electrical and Information Engineering, and Zhang Zhen, a professor of School of Electrical and Information Engineering.
Prof. Joachim Holtz expressed gratitude to Tianjin University for conferring him the honorary professor and vividly described his teaching and research experience in China during his acceptance speech. After the conferring ceremony, Prof. Joachim Holtz gave a Distinguished Lecture titled "Control of Induction Motors on the Basis of Complex State Variables" for teachers, students, and researchers. Prof. Joachim Holtz introduced advanced techniques on motor drive such as the predictive control for high-power medium voltage drive, theoretically and practically. He shared latest researches on the reduction of switching losses in medium voltage drive systems.
Prof. Joachim Holtz had a deep and thorough exchange with the attending teachers and students on the key issues in the field of power electronics as well as tips in daily research. Prof. Joachim Holtz has been active in research on power electronics until the age of 90, which encouraged each attendee. He also encouraged young researchers to strive for accumulation and continue active exploration.
Prof. Joachim Holtz visited Tianjin University again after attending the establishment ceremony of the IEEE IES Beijing Chapter in 2018. He was officially appointed as an Honorary Professor at Tianjin University this time, which would further promote the international cooperation and exchange in the field of power electronics. It is significant for fully consolidating and leveraging the research capabilities of Tianjin University in the field of power electronics. The IES Distinguished Lecture given by Prof. Joachim Holtz is the second international academic lecture supported by IEEE IES Beijing Chapter and School of Electrical and Information Engineering of Tianjin University in 2023. A series of lectures not only provide the opportunities for researchers to discuss on power electronics, but deepen the cooperation between Tianjin University and IEEE IES Beijing Chapter, thereby promoting the development of the industrial electronics.
